Dominic Michael Vespa, 86, of Springfield, passed away at 2:36 pm, Sunday, August 9, 2026, at Springfield Suites.
He was born on October 26, 1939, in Riverton, IL, the son of Michael Joseph and Irene Teresa (Santarelli) Vespa. He married Judy Laverne Fouts on February 9, 1964, and she preceded him in death on April 1, 2024.
Also preceding him in death were his parents; son, Anthony Vespa and sister, Nancy (Vespa) Broccardo.
He is survived by two sons, Greg (Cheryl) Vespa of Belleville, IL and Chris (Darci) Vespa of Springfield; eight grandchildren; several great grandchildren and a sister, Elinor Welch of Springfield.
Dominic was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Riverton. He belonged to the Roman Cultural Society, the Italian American War Veterans and the Knights of Columbus in Riverton.
He served as a Volunteer Fireman in Riverton Area Fire Protection District for over 65 years and retired from the Illinois Department of Transportation after 35 years of service. He served with the Army National Guard from 1962-1968.
Visitation: 1 – 3 pm, Sunday August 30, 2026, at Staab Funeral Home – Springfield.
Funeral Mass: 12:00 noon, Monday, August 31, 2026, at St. James Church in Riverton with Reverend Frederick Chima Mbiere officiating. Burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Knights of Columbus in Riverton immediately after the funeral mass and final ceremonial procession.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Riverton Area Fire Protection District.
